Did Letterman’s Joke About Palin’s Daughter Go Too Far?
Late night talk show funny-man David Letterman is a known left wing political jokester. Letterman often uses his liberal ideology to identify with his audience and take jabs at conservatives. Tuesday night Letterman took aim at Gov. Sarah Palin and her family, making them the target of his ‘top ten’ list. But it was Letterman’s monologue that has created a firestorm amongst conservatives and child protection groups. Sarah Palin was recently in New York with her fourteen year old daughter WIllow. While there, they attended a New York Yankees baseball game. During Letterman’s monologue he stated that “One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez.” Letterman’s joke prompted a response from the Palin’s who released a statement on their Facebook page as well as to the media. “Concerning Letterman's comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he'd ever dare make such comments about anyone else's daughter): 'Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands - that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments
about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.' ” The question on the table is whether making jokes about underage girls is actually funny, or just sick? Letterman replied to the Palin’s complaint by stating that “Sarah Palin can’t take a joke.” That statement drips of passive-aggressive behavior. When someone purposely insults another person and gets called out, they invariably say that it was just a joke. Whatever your view on Letterman’s joke, words have meaning and it is morally borderline making jokes at the expense of young children. Fourteen year old kids are innocent and should not be mocked. Especially coming from a sixty two year old talk show host in front of a national audience.
