What Can We Learn From ‘Operation Wetback’?

Operation Wetback was a very successful anti-immigration program instituted in 1950’s America. The initiative was begun in 1954 and its objective was to round up all Mexican illegal aliens and deport them back to Mexico, in an effort to provide more jobs for legal U.S. citizens who had returned from World War II and the Korean War. The program was run by General Joseph Swing, who was appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In all, the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) was attempting to deport roughly three million Mexican nationals out of the United States. Operation Wetback agents swept through ‘barrios’ in the southwestern United States, apprehending illegal aliens and deporting them deep into the heart of Mexico in an effort to discourage them from returning. Clearly, from the name Operation Wetback, the 1950’s were a different time. Political correctness was non-existent, and decisions such as these were made based on what was ultimately good for America, not factoring in whose feelings might get hurt. In January of 2006, Banco de Mexico and Pew Research reported that there were 6,840,000 illegal immigrants in the United States from Mexico. Illegal immigration is once again sapping the life out of our great country. Taxpayers are being forced to pay for the healthcare of illegals and the schooling for their
children. If the United States could deport three million illegals back in the 1950’s, surely we could do the same now. However, instead of actually tackling the current illegal alien problem, our government is seriously contemplating amnesty for these people who have come here illegally. This is not only ridiculous, but it would also reward illegal behavior. Is that the message we want to send? There are two major factions of Americans who are either actively, or passively supporting these illegal aliens. The first, are U.S. businesses who are using the illegal aliens for cheap labor. Many businesses have built their business strategies around these cheap, illegal wages. Here we have a bit of a chicken and egg situation because the businesses wouldn’t use the illegal labor if the illegals weren’t here in the United States, but the illegal aliens wouldn’t be sneaking across the border unless there were American business entities wiling to hire them. The second group who depends on illegal aliens are the Democrats. Democrat politicians know that by pushing for things such as amnesty, they are buying the votes of the illegal aliens as well as the hispanic community in general. But illegal aliens are not allowed to vote, you say. Illegal aliens take the name and social security identification of a legal resident and head to the polls. Since our government, in its infinite wisdom, has decided that voters do not have to produce valid identification when voting, the illegals sail through the polls. By the time the government figures out the system has been gamed, the election is over. Give me one solid reason why U.S. citizens should not have to show an ID when voting. There is one strategy that would put an end to both of these groups’ use of illegal aliens. Mass deportation . It worked in the Great Depression and again in the 1950’s, and it would work now, if we as a nation collectively grew a spine and started to care about the future of our country.
